Hardwood decks

Hardwood decking, like ipe, offers a luxurious appearance with its beautiful boards. It is known for its toughness, durability, and resistance to insects, rot, and hail. Although it may come at a higher price and require regular maintenance, hardwood decking provides a stunning and long-lasting outdoor option.

One of the standout features of hardwood decking is its exceptional toughness and durability. Hardwoods like ipe are known for their incredible strength and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, making them an ideal option for areas with high usage. This durability ensures that your deck will retain its structural integrity for many years, even in harsh weather conditions.

Hardwood decking is highly resistant to various external factors that can compromise its longevity. It naturally repels insects, such as termites, due to its dense and hardwood fibers. Additionally, hardwood decking exhibits excellent resistance to rot, decay, and fungal growth, further enhancing its durability and ensuring a long-lasting deck that can withstand the test of time.

Popular hardwood choices

Ipe is a Brazilian redwood and is truly an amazing wood for decks. Although it costs more, it is not unusual for it to last 50 to 75 years and it’s very attractive. If you’re considering getting a wood deck, you should at least take a look at Ipe.

Ipe:

Ipe is the best choice for decking. It’s a strong and stable wood that works well in any environment. It doesn’t need to be dried for outdoor use, so it’s quickly available. It usually arrives at around 12-15% moisture. Ipe is one of the hardest woods, so it’s very durable. It’s a popular option for decking due to its excellent performance, but the superior performance and high demand of course come at a higher price point.

Cumaru:

Cumaru, also known as Brazilian Teak, is a wood species that is slightly softer than Ipe. There are two types of Cumaru: yellow and red. The red variant is more commonly used for decking. Cumaru has a red-brown color similar to Ipe and offers high density and hardness, making it a good alternative. It is readily available and priced at about two-thirds the cost of Ipe.

Red Balau:

Balau is a wood species that is easier to work with compared to other tropical woods. It belongs to the Shorea genus, which explains its similarities to Mahogany in terms of workability, texture, and color. Balau is hard, durable (harder than domestic Hard Maple), and has consistent color with fewer defects compared to other tropical decking woods. Additionally, it is about half the price of Ipe. Balau is highly regarded in the tropical decking industry, although it may be more challenging to find at a local dealer compared to Ipe and Cumaru.

Tigerwood:

Tigerwood, also known as Goncalo Alves, is a type of decking wood known for its brownish orange background color and dark stripes that resemble a tiger’s appearance. Over time, it will darken to a deeper reddish brown shade. The wood generally dries well and remains stable in various climates, but kiln drying is necessary to achieve optimal stability. Tigerwood decking is commonly used for both outdoor and indoor applications. While it is readily available, the variation in striping can make it challenging to assemble a deck with a consistent appearance. One board may have no stripes, while another may be heavily striped. Additionally, based on our experience, the smooth texture of Tigerwood, although nice on bare feet, can be slippery.
